1:1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?
2 And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.
3 And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.It would seem as if Israel is ready to carry on after the death of Joshua. They sought the Lord, asked His counsel, then began to obey. But as you read through this chapter over and over again they stopped just short of doing all that God commanded them to do. They have victory over the enemy, then stop short of driving them out of the land. This may seem like a small thin, and probably did to them. But in the end those that remained turned the heart of the people away from God. Eventually the people of Israel went into idol worship and God had to judge them. Incomplete obedience is a problem for all of God’s people. It may seem to us at times that God demands much of us. But remember with God’s command comes God’s enabling. They had the power to drive the enemy out just as we have the power to obey within.
