20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
21 So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God:
22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.
Jacob often amuses me but not in a good way. Perhaps because I see so much of my self in Jacob. To read these verses by themselves it may seem like a good thing, the vow of Jacob. However if you read the entire chapter you find that God already promised Jacob all the things that Jacob then tried to secure with this vow. Several thoughts then come to my mind. (1) The lack of trust on the part of Jacob. God already promised these things. Why not then just simply trust in the Lord? (2) The lack of joy and peace in the life of Jacob. This is a result of a lack of trust. Jacob was always worried, always fearful of losing what he had, always worried about not having enough. Why not rest in the promises of God? (3) Jacob was trying to make a deal with God. Does God look at us and see something He needs? What of Jacob had refused to make Jehovah his God? Would God then have thrown away His plan and purpose? Or would God have chosen another to use in bringing His plan and purpose to pass? God doesn’t need us, we need the Lord. Too many of us are too much like Jacob too much of the time.
