1 Sam 3:4
4 That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I .
Isa 6:8
8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I ; send me.The phrase “here am I” is not one found often in Scripture. Only 16 times and all of them in the Old Testament. In our reading we see two men being called of God into service and both respond by saying here am I. ‘But what of the other times that phrase is used.
Isaac answered here am I when Abraham took him into the mount to offer sacrifice to God.
Abraham answered here am I when the angel stopped him from killing his only son in sacrifice to God.
Jacob answered here am I when the covenant was confirmed to him.
Joseph answered here am I when sent by his father to find his brothers in the field tending sheep.
Jacob answered here am I when sent by God to Egypt.
Moses answered here am I when God called to him out of the burning bush.
But the phrase was also used in a negative way.
Jacob answered here am I when he deceived his father.
An enemy answered here am I when reporting the death of Saul.
What is my point? One must be ready to answer God at all times. But are we. So many use the phrase here am I in the wrong way. Here am I Lord but right now I am too tired, too busy to be bothers with you. Hare am I Lord but at the moment I want to life my life, I will call when I need you. Here am I Lord but come back some other time.
Are you one that answers here am I because you are listening for God or because you don’t want to hear Him?
