And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplication, with fasting, and sackcloth , and ashes:How many times in the Bible do we see men in sackcloth and ashes? It is an outward sign of calling out to God, an outward sign of repentance, an outward sign of mourning in the Bible. It is like wearing black to a funeral today. In Daniel we see a man really repentant before God and that for the nation of Israel. But many times we see men in the Bible just going through the motions. In Joel God tells us what He is looking for. – Joel 2:13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. In other words God wants the heart before the outward actions. When God has the heart the other will follow but God must have the heart first. I fear today that most throw on the outward actions but never give God the heart.
