November 5th, 2009 by Pastor SolleyJohn 13:36-3836 Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.
37 Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.
38 Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.
It is no small wonder that Peter was willing to follow Jesus anywhere, that Peter was willing to lay down his life for Jesus considering what just took place. Jesus had humbled Himself and washed the feet of Peter and the others. The Messiah, the Christ of God had washed their feet. Peter knew just how much Jesus loved him, just how much Jesus was willing to do for him. Peter was willing to do all for Jesus. How different things may have been over the next several hours for Peter if he had kept the events that had just transpired in the front of his mind, if he had kept them before his eyes. Peter would for a moment lose sight of what Jesus had done. His eyes would be taken off Christ and would look to self, look at the enemies of Jesus, look at the world around him. Peter would deny the Lord he was willing to die for. The same thing happens to us when we forget to keep our eyes on Jesus. We find ourselves standing with the world, acting like the world, and denying the one who died for us when we fail to keep our eyes on Jesus.
