1 Kings 19:9-12 And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?
10 And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake:
12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
KJV
How often do you sit quietly before the Lord? Elijah was in need of the presence of the Lord and for that presence to be felt. There was a strong wind, an earthquake, and perhaps something like that was what Elijah was looking for. He was in fear of his life, he was being hunted, he was on the run and he felt so all alone. If only God would make His presence known to the prophet. What better way to do that than a wind that shook rocks off that mountain or an earthquake? The better way was in the still small voice and that would soon bring comfort and encouragement to the weary prophet. There are times when we need to just sit quietly before the Lord. I find it so refreshing to just sit, head bowed, eyes closed, and listen for that still small voice. To sit silently and allow God to speak through the Holy Spirit. We need to cry out to the Lord, we need to bring our burdens to the Lord, we need to pray, we need to ask. All those things we need and are commanded to do. But we also need time to just sit quietly before the Lord so we can hear that still small voice that brings comfort and encouragement to a weary soul.
