Ps 16:1-5 Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.
2 O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee;
3 But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.
4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.
5 The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.
KJV
Let us take another step this morning leading from verse one of this Psalm to the last verse where there is fullness of joy. Note the sorrows of the lost, how they are multiplied because they look to the gods of this world and not to the true and living God. (Verse 4) It is not that we have no sorrows or troubles as Christians. It is not that we shed no tears and suffer no broken hearts. We experience the very same things in this world that a lost person does. Yet our sorrows do not need to be multiplied because we have one to carry us through the sorrows and trials of this life. Was at a funeral for a young man yesterday and there was and continues to be sorrow. But that one died knowing Jesus Christ as personal savior and there is great hope and joy in the midst of sorrow. Received a call for prayer for one in need yesterday afternoon and then heard that prayers was answered last evening. Sorrow turned to joy. Received another request for prayer late last evening and prayer was made and even though an answer has not as of yet been heard that worry and sorrow is tempered with knowing our God hears and answers prayer. How much more difficult are the troubles of this world when they are multiplied and there is none to help. Our steps lead to the one who can help and sustain through the sorrows of this life.
