Ps 16 Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.
O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee;
But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.
Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.
The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.
The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.
I will bless the Lord, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.
I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.
For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

There are many steps in this Psalm and we will look at a few of them this week. For today we take the first verse and the last verse of the Psalm and put them together, the first step and the last step of the Psalm. David asks the Lord to preserve him and pledges his trust to the Lord. That is the first step one must take as a lost sinner bound for hell, ask the Lord Jesus Christ to save and trust in Him. Salvation is not believing in God, not believing in Jesus, not believing in the cross, it is calling upon the Lord to save from sin and hell, to preserve by giving eternal life. One must see themselves as s sinner, repent, and call out in faith to Jesus to forgive and save. When we trust God and obey we can be saved. David put his trust in the Lord. What was the end of that step? (Ps 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.) A good path to follow through life, the promise of joy, and a place with Jesus for evermore. A good first step and a good last step. Are you born again this morning? Have you cried out as a lost sinner for Jesus to forgive and save you? If that answer is yes there is a good ending. But there are other steps in between and we will see the rest of the Psalm this week. For today, be sure that you have taken the first step.
