Matt 16:23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
Col 3:1-2 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
KJV
Above are the first and last uses of the Greek word that is translated “Savourest” in Matt 16:23. We find then that we are to savor, or set our affections on things above and not on things on earth and that is what Peter was doing when he was rebuked by Jesus. It was a good thing that Peter wanted the Kingdom of God set up upon the earth, a good thing that he wanted Jesus on the throne of David, a good thing that he wanted Jesus to live and not die. Those were good things but they were not yet for that time. Often we want things that are good but do we want them in God’s way and in God’s time? Are our affections set upon self, upon the world, or are they set upon God and the things of God? Peter was headed for a fall and so will we be if do not set our affections on the things of God. What is your desire today, what do you savior? Are you seeking after the things of God? If we desire that close walk with our Lord, if we desire to see the working of the Lord in our lives and those around us we need to savior the right things.
