16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.
17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
KJV
If you had a choice today would you rather be happy or sad? Silly question for wouldn’t we all rather be happy? The word happy is found only six times in the New Testament and a look at the circumstances in which the word happy is used reveals what will make one truly happy in this life. In our reading today we see the first use of the word happy as Jesus, after washing the feet of the disciples tells them “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” It is an example of serving others. When we serve others, when we are a help to others, when we serve in the name of the Lord, when we serve Jesus the way He was willing to serve “Happy are ye.” It is no wonder then today in our me first and everyone serve me society that so few people are happy. What can you do for someone else today? Is there someone that could use a helping hand that you know of? Could you give an encouraging word to someone, pray with them, pray for them, is there someone you could be a blessing to today? I know a brother in the Lord who prays every morning for the Lord to place someone in his path that day that he could help in one way or another. Happiness comes when we get our eyes off of self and begin to look to the needs of others, when we serve as Jesus did.
