Luke 15:13-17 And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.
14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.
15 And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.
17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!
KJV
Another relationship that was wasted when the younger son went into a far country is brought out in verse seventeen this morning, the relationship he had with self. I imagine there was a time when he was happy, when he had peace within, that he had all that he needed and more in his father’s house. Can we then imagine how he must have felt as he hit rock bottom, was in such need that he would eat what pigs would leave behind, and there was no man to help lift him up? Father and brother, hired servants were all left behind, those relationships wasted, and now torn apart by guilt and shame, this was a wasted man and we see another wasted relationship. The far country is always a waste land as it is viewed in this parable. My earthly father used to say these words to me often as I would leave the house as a teen, “Remember who you are and what you are.” The times I remembered those words brought about peace and joy as I returned home, the times I forgot them took those things from me as I returned to the same home. It is good to remember that the far country is a wasteland and to keep in mind the words I still hear in my heart and mind today “Remember who you are and what you are.”
