12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.
13 And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.
14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.

This very familiar parable given by Jesus has some very powerful lessons for us today. It is not a parable about salvation but about relationships that existed already. The word wasted in verse 13 means to squander and waste something very valuable. The word want in verse 14 means to be destitute and to be deficient. I hope to make some spiritual applications and see what we may indeed be wasting today. First, the closeness with his father. (Luke 15:12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.) There is a closeness and trust between father and son that is implied in this verse. No hesitation on the part of the son in asking what was not yet to be his and no protest from the father concerning the request as it was immediately granted. Why? There was a closeness between father and son that the father cherished and the son took for granted. How close are you to your heavenly Father, a closeness that our God cherishes. Is it one you take for granted, one that you waste away? Our heaven Father wants to spend time with us, wants to be close to us, cherishes that time we spend with Him. Do you? Or is that time wasted, squandered away as we move off into a far country? I have a ceratin amount of time that can be spent with my heavenly Father today and I pray I do not waste that time for I will never get it back. Time to pray and speak to Him, time to read my Bible and allow Him to speak to me, time to meditate upon His Word, time to thank Him for all He is doing for me, precious time with Him. Do you desire and cherish that relationship with your heavenly Father or will you squander away that part of your relationship with God through the Lord Jesus Christ? How close are you to the Father?
