Luke 14:25-27
And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them, 26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. 27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. 

What a high cost of being a disciple of Jesus, having to hate your father and mother. That is what the Bible says is it not? (Verse 26) Or could the word hate mean something different than what we first think it to mean in this verse? It does of course. To “hate” your father and mother here means that we are not to put them, put anyone above the Lord Jesus Christ in our lives. One does not have to be a Greek scholar to see this. If the bible tells us that we are to love one another as it does, if the Bible tells us to honor our parents as it does, then the Bible is not going to make a 180 and tell us to hate our parents. One must be careful to read things in context, both near and far, and consider all the Bible comparing Scripture with Scripture. God does not contradict Himself. Many a false doctrine had sprung out of a few isolated Scriptures.
