9 Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.
10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.
11 Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.

Lot wanted more than the lot the Lord has already blessed him with and it must have seemed to Lot that the only way to get that was to separate from the one the Lord was blessing. It is hard to find one good thing that took place in Lot’s life after he separated from Abraham. His worldly riches which were counted in flocks and herds must have increased, but only for a while. He was able to sit in the gate of Sodom, a place of power and honor, but only for a while. His daughters married and must have been happy, but only for a while. His wife loved the city and must have been happy in Sodom, but only for a while. It cost Lot everything to gain more of what the world had to offer and then to learn that the well watered plains of the world never last. Satan has a way of making all that is of the Lord seem small in this world and the riches of the world seem so large that they will never fail or fall. Abraham is called a friend of God and when one separates from that friend of God it is never a good thing. This is NOT about separating from a man but separating from a walk from the one we know is of God, the Lord Jesus Christ. The lot we have been given in this life by Jesus is always the best lot we could ever have and that lot may seem to be little in the eyes of the world but it is the best lot one could ever have. (Prov 15:16-17 Better is little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble therewith. 17 Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.) Lot learned that the hard way.
