1 Cor 3:11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
Eccl 2:10-11 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.
11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

Solomon attempted to build a foundation of pleasures of the flesh, money and power but like king Nebuchadnezzar he found that foundation to be one that failed him. The words of Solomon were ones that bring that to the surface. “Whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.” But what did that foundation bring to him? “Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.” That foundation failed and left Solomon feeling empty and tormented. The pleasures of life for any of us are but for a season and we are warned in the Bible that they will not be lasting or satisfying. How many years Solomon spent building that foundation I am not sure, how much vexation of spirit he went through I do not know, but we do know that foundation failed Solomon. Then at the end of his life, or near the end, Solomon again turned to the one sure foundation that would never fail or be destroyed. (Eccl 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.)
