Dan 4:27-31 Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.
28 All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar.
29 At the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon.
30 The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?
31 While the word was in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee.
KJV
We are looking at some who tried to build on other foundations, not Jesus, and how those attempts failed. Nebuchadnezzar’s foundation was self, pride, and Babylon as he stated in verse thirty above “Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?” Although warned by Daniel to humble himself before God the king chose to look at what he had done, what he had built. Indeed the Hanging Gardens of Babylon are listed as one of the seven ancient wonders of the world and they must have been what the king was looking at or was looking from. They were described as a remarkable feat of engineering with an ascending series of tiered gardens containing a wide variety of trees, shrubs, and vines, resembling a large green mountain constructed of mud bricks. But mud and brinks do not make a sure foundation and before the words were out of the king’s mouth the kingdom was taken from him. If your foundation rests upon self, upon what you have accomplished in this world, upon pride, your foundation will also be destroyed. The Bible tells us that “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” And Jesus tells us that
“Without me ye can do nothing.” Pride should have no place in our lives for it will always lead to a fall, and what can we do in this world apart from God’s grace and mercy? The next word I type, the next breath I draw will be because my heavenly Father permitted me to do so. To think otherwise is to rest on a foundation that will fail just like king Nebuchadnezzar.
