Isa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
His name shall be called wonderful, Counsellor…To whom do you go for counsel when you need wisdom and advice? There used to be a column in our local newspaper “Dear Abby” that would give advice to those who has written with a question about life decisions or relationships. (It may very well still be included in the paper.) That advice may or may not have been sound but it was always given from a human perspective and based on human experience. That is not where a Christian should seek counsel as we need wisdom from God’s perspective. The word counsellor in our verse this morning means to advise and to guide. If I sit quietly before the Lord, if I pray, if I ask for wisdom, if I seek His guidance and direction it will be given. Consider these verses. (Ps 32:8 I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. ; Prov 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.) What do we need to do in order to have these promises true in our lives? Ask. (James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.) To whom do you go for counsel today? Make sure you go to the one who will never send you in a wrong direction.
