Mark 2:14-17 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.
15 And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.
16 And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?
17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
KJV
There was a complaint logged by the religious leaders of the day that Jesus sat down with the publicans and sinners. First, Jesus never put lost people at ease in their sins, Jesus preached that they sin no more after they came to Him and He met their spiritual need. (John 8:10-12 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? 11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. 12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.) I am so thankful today that Jesus would sit with me and deliver me from sin and sins, that Jesus would save me because I asked Him in faith and believing to come into my heart and be my savior. That is what happened in the life of Matthew in our reading this morning and what can take place in your life today if you have never been born again. Jesus is willing to sit with you, to save you, to dwell within you, and to lead you through this life. No individual is so bad they cannot be saved and no individual is so good they need not be saved. Praise God that Jesus will sit with any and all calling for them to be born again.
