Phil 4:11-12 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.
12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
KJV
One of the harder lessons to learn in this life is found in these two verse, how to be content. Are you content this morning? Most people are not. We want better jobs, better cars, better clothes, better health, better everything it seems. Paul learned by experience how to be content when he was abased. The word means to be pressed, to be humbled, to be made low. Paul was abased and yet Paul was content. Paul also learned to be content when he was abounding. That word means to have more than needed, to be lifted up. Under trial and persecution, down in the valley, Paul was content. In victory and on the mountain top Paul was content. His contentment was found in Jesus Christ because Paul knew whatever state he was in Jesus was by His side and he was not alone. In trial and in triumph Paul was in Christ and Christ in Paul and in that Paul was content. Have you learned to be content in the Lord no matter what state you are found in? It is truly a hard lesson to learn.
