Eccl 1:13-14 And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.
14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
KJV
Labor Day is a day set apart here in our nation to celebrate the American worker. Have you ever stopped and wonder what we are working for and why we celebrate? Solomon came to the conclusion that he has been working and building for nothing “All the works that are done under the sun” come to nothing, are vanity to that great king. Those works even caused vexation of spirit to Solomon. Solomon was right in his conclusion. All of the things that we work for in this world are temporary at best. Paychecks are gone in a week. Cars wear out and break down. Eventually houses need much repair or they fall down as well. Savings accounts dwindle away. What are we working for in this world? We need to work and we should work and that is what God wants us to do. But until we begin to work for the Lord, until we begin to build and work for spiritual things all work is vanity. Jesus said to build towards, to lay up treasures in heaven. When we begin to serve the Lord, when we make our bodies that living sacrifice for the Lord, then we begin to see things laid up on a true foundation that will never be lost, that will never fade away. I will celebrate work today but the greater celebration is working for the Lord.
