John 8:32-36 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33 They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
KJV
We will celebrate our freedom as a nation is just one more day and we need stop and thank Almighty God for the freedom we have in these United States of America. But what makes one free and what needs to take place for one to become free? First, one must know they are in bondage. In our text this morning we see those ones standing before the Lord Jesus Christ and claiming that they were already free. (John 8:33 They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?) At the same time they made the claim they were never in bondage the nation was in bondage to Rome and had been in bondage to one foreign power or another for over four hundred years. One must know they are in bondage before they can be free. We move now to the spiritual bondage people are in today, bondage to Satan and to sin. Unless one knows they are in bondage they can never be free. How many today stand apart from Jesus Christ, a slave to sin, and they don’t even realize it? Jesus is there to give freedom from sin and eternal life to all just as He offered those things to those standing before Him in John chapter eight. They would not acknowledge the need, acknowledge they were in bondage and needed Jesus. We all need Jesus today, all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, all need to be set free. But we fist need to know the bondage we are in. Can you see today the need in your life? Can you see the bondage you are in? That is the first step to freedom. Look to Jesus Christ today for there is a need to be set free.
