Neh 7:1-3 Now it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the porters and the singers and the Levites were appointed,
2 That I gave my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the ruler of the palace, charge over Jerusalem: for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many.
3 And I said unto them, Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun be hot; and while they stand by, let them shut the doors, and bar them: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one to be over against his house.

Nehemiah was a man used in a great way by God to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, restore the gates and begin again worship in the temple all of which had been destroyed and looted years before as the nation fell into Gentile captivity. As the work was completed Nehemiah knew there was still a need to be watchful so watchers were appointed to keep and guard the city. We stand in need of watchers today. Many times I find myself with eyes toward heaven in these last days looking and longing for the return of the Lord and that great day when we as born again believers in Christ will see Jesus face to face. While there is nothing wrong with that we must be careful to be watchful right now. If we do not set a watch, if we are not watchful the enemy may sneak in unawares and try and destroy us and our testimony right now. We are commanded in the Bible “Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.” Jesus had this question and command for Peter “Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour? Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.” My friends we do need to be watchful today. Many churches and Christians fall to the wiles of the devil today because they are not watchful. (Eph 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.) The great work of Nehemiah was completed but there was still a need for watchers. Be watching today for Satan is still that roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.
