John 17:15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
KJV
As Jesus did not pray that we be taken out of this world He also prayed for our purpose as Christians in this world. John chapter seventeen answers the questions of “Why doesn’t God just take me home?” One purpose we have is to bring glory to our heavenly Father as we noted yesterday. Another purpose is that we present to the lost and dying world a different life that one can have in Jesus Christ. (John 17:16-19 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. 18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.) In the world but not of the world. Sanctified and set apart for Jesus Christ. The world needs to see how much better life is when one Has Jesus Christ within and lives day to day for Him. Jesus does give us a better life to live right now in this world. We know we have a better life coming, a better place to be when we pass from this world and we look with great anticipation toward heaven. But we have a better life right now when we have Jesus Christ. How can the lost see the life that is offered to them in Jesus Christ unless they see it in us? They can hear and faith does come by hearing and hearing by the Word of God but as the old saying goes “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Show those apart from Christ just how much better life is in this world with Jesus Christ. That life will often contain trials and sorrows and even then life is better with Jesus Christ. Show them today.
