Luke 22:39-43 And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.
40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.
41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,
42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.

Time not allowing us to look at everything Jesus did during Passion Week we look at one more thing this morning, Jesus in prayer. Many wrongly say that Jesus was praying to get out of going to the cross in verse forty two. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Jesus came into this world to go to that cross. Jesus came into this world to seek and to save the lost and that would be accomplished only on the cross. The Bible tells us that Jesus took joy in the cross, it was joy set before Him to suffer and die for you and me. That is hard to understand but that is what the Bible says. (Heb 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.) I believe with all of my heart that Jesus was praying for strength to get to the cross, strength to carry out the will of the Father that had been determined even before the world began. (Acts 2:23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:) Praise God today that the prayer of Jesus was answered, Jesus did go to that cross, Jesus suffered beyond what one could ever imagine, Jesus shed His blood, Jesus died, and Jesus rose from that tomb and is alive today! The prayer of Jesus in verse forty two was answered in verse forty three and in His humanity Jesus was strengthened for the work of the cross. Praise God today for the sacrifice made for your sin and mine and do not let it be a sacrifice made in vain as far as you are concerned. Put you faith in Jesus Christ today, in Jesus alone, be born again, and then praise Him for His sacrifice made for you.
