John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
KJV
In our look at the phrase “Be of good cheer” this week it is important to note that when that command is given by Jesus it comes at a time when people are in great need. The first time we find that command given by Jesus has to do with sins forgiven. (Matt 9:1-2 And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. 2 And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.) This man came also with a physical need but that was not what Jesus attended to first. Jesus forgave that man’s sin and sins. That man came to salvation in Jesus Christ, that man met the Messiah, the Savior, the Christ and his sins were forgiven. If that man had never been healed, and he was, sins forgiven would have been enough. Can you give thanks for sins forgiven today? Can you be of good cheer because you have received through Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ alone eternal life? Many times we allow the troubles, trials, and cares of this life to steal away the joy of salvation. Whatever your circumstance in life is at this very moment you can be of good cheer dear Christian because your sins have been forgiven. When you are moved to wonder “Why me, why this, why now” take some time to remember what has been done for you in salvation. Take time to remember that sins, your sins, have been forgiven by a just and holy God. Take time to remember that Jesus saved you when you were beyond saving. Take time to remember and be of good cheer today.
