John 15:14-16 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
KJV
What makes one a friend of God? We saw yesterday that there must be a relationship. (John 15:2
Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.) One must be in Christ, one must have a relationship with Jesus Christ through the new birth. That is the beginning of the relationship but that is not all that is needed in this friendship. There must also be an acknowledgment. (John 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.) In this relationship we need Jesus Christ. In many friendships it seems there is often a more needy party. One individual depends upon, needs the friendship more than the other. That is not always the case but it often seems to be. That is most definitely the case with Jesus and the believer. We need Jesus, we need His friendship. Jesus can get along fine without us, but what of us without Him? Strangely enough there are some who act as if Jesus needs them and could not get along without them. When speaking they use the words I and me so much that you know their world revolves around them. But the one who is a friend of God knows they can do nothing and never could do anything without Jesus. Without Jesus Christ we are nothing more than lost sinners headed for an eternity In hell. Only Jesus can change that and only Jesus can make a life of any value at all. How many times do you acknowledge that you need Jesus and cannot make it through even this day without Him? How many times do you bow your head and thank Him for making something of value out of you? Or are you that needy friend who never bothers to say thank you? Are you that friend that thinks he can stand apart and alone? That one is not a friend of God. To be a friend of God there must be an acknowledgment of just how much we need Him.
