January 5th, 2023 by Pastor Solley1 Cor 2:1-5 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.
2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.
4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
KJV
Paul did not come to those at Corinth with excellency of speech or with enticing words. So what did Paul bring to them, what did Paul show to them that moved them to Jesus Christ? It was the demonstration of the power of God in that man’s life. What could take a lost sinner, one determined to destroy all those that even mentioned the name of Jesus, one that was doing all he could to stamp out the new church, what could change that man? It would not be excellency of speech that would change Paul. It would not be enticing words that would change Paul. It would be the power of God that changed Paul as he met Jesus face to face on that dusty road on the way to Damascus. Paul was forever and gloriously changed by the power of God. That is what people need to see in us as believers in Christ, the power of God resting upon us. People need to see in us lives that have been and are being changed by the power of God. When others see that in us they want what we have because they see something real and something lasting. I will stand behind a pulpit and preach on Sunday but what will be seen? If it is excellency of speech which I am hardly capable of it will be of little good. If they are enticing words they will be empty. But if people can see the power of God then they will be moved by the Holy Spirit. Others need to see, our families need to see, our communities need to see the power of God and they need to see that power in us. Paul was determined to walk in that power and that power was seen in him.
