Ps 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
KJV
Psalm 51 is one that is filled with prayer requests. The Psalm begins with a request for God’s mercy and in verse eighteen the psalmist asks for God’s good pleasure to be poured out. No request greater than the one in our text verse “renew a right spirit within me.” David is pleading for God to renew his spirit, to bring his spirit into alignment with the heart of God. Why? Because David had lost the joy of his salvation. What stole away that joy? Sin. (Ps 51:3-4 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.) A sin that David tried to cover up. A sin that took David into more sin. A sin that David could not get away from. A sin that robbed David of joy. The very same thing, sin, can do the very same things to the child of God today. We may not commit the sins that David did, may not do things so grievous, but sin no matter how small can do the very same things to the child of God today. What is it that is robbing you of the joy of the Lord today? We may attach other names to the sin that is besetting us today but it is still sin. Sin still needs to be confessed, repented of, and given to the Lord Jesus Christ. But will God restore the joy we once had, will God grant us a renewed spirit? The lat few verses of Psalm 51 indicate that David’s request was answered after David confessed and turned his life and heart back over to the Lord. (Ps 51:15-19 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. 16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. 18 Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem. 19 Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.) Don’t allow sin, no matter how small to rob you of the blessings of the Lord today.
