1 Cor 4:1-2 Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.
2 Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.
KJV
In our text this morning someone is being called to give and account and that someone is a steward. A steward is one who was or is given charge over something that belongs to another. In the Old Testament Joseph became a steward of all that belonged to Pharaoh. (Gen 41:39-41
And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art:40 Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou.41 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.) In our text we find one who is a steward. But who is that steward and over what have they been given charge that does not belong to them? We are the stewards, all who are reading this today are the stewards. Man or woman, young or old, boy or girl, we are the stewards, we have been given something to see over that does not belong to us. According to verse one we have been given charge over something that belongs to Christ and to God. But what? First of all, our lives. This first application is for the lost as well as the saved. How? All life belongs to God for God alone is the giver of life. Even those lost in sin and apart from Christ owe their life to God and God has given Jesus Christ to pay the price for their sin, to redeem them, to save them by His shed blood on the cross. So now give an account of what you have done with Jesus Christ in relation to your life. Have you been faithful to the plan of salvation and been born again? Or have you ignored Jesus, are you indifferent to Jesus, would you rather remain in sin? One day you will give an account of stewardship in relation to your life and Jesus Christ. What will that account reveal?
