2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

In order to run the race some things need to be laid aside and two things are named in verse one, weights and sin. Let us first address the weights that hinder one running in the race. Years ago when I was a runner I would at times carry weights when I ran. Not heavy weights but weights that I wore around my wrists, some weighted vests were also an option. They were training aids and they were always put aside when it was time to run in a race. In our Christian race we need no such training aids but we do need to lay aside every weight that can hinder us. Those weights may not be evil, may be some very natural things. The hobby that keeps one from being in the house of God as they should be. That late night TV program that keeps one from getting up in time to pray and read their Bible. That sporting event that is always on Sunday or Wednesday. Things that make one lazy or indifferent to the things of God. Weights are not beneficial to the Christian walk and need to be laid aside and if they are not they can quickly turn into sin. No one running in a race carries a weight that will hinder where they will finish.
