Ps 86:1-4 Bow down thine ear, O Lord, hear me: for I am poor and needy.
2 Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee.
3 Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily.
4 Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
KJV
Does your soul ever need rejoicing? That Hebrew word for rejoice means to be made glad and merry. Does your soul ever need rejoicing? Where to meet that need? Is it in family, friends, activities, money, houses, lands? Where to meet that need? David knew. This man who had power, position, wealth, knew where the rejoicing of the soul could be found, in the Lord. But notice it was a process, the rejoicing of the soul. David cried unto the Lord daily. (Verse 3) David was a man of prayer, a man who spent time with his Lord. Do you? David also lifted up his soul to the Lord. (Verse 4) The picture is that of David presenting himself to the Lord. He is not looking for the world to meet his need, not looking to family or advisors and friends, not even looking to his position as king. All of those things and people did elevate David, but not his soul. For David joy and gladness would be found in his Lord. When you are weary of soul where do you turn to find the gladness and joy you need? These verses ring as true today as they did when David put those things into practice. Why not cry out to the Lord and present yourself to Him today? When we do we find out what David found out, there is rejoicing in the Lord.
