Ps 116:1-9 I love the Lord, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications.
2 Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live.
3 The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow.
4 Then called I upon the name of the Lord; O Lord, I beseech thee, deliver my soul.
5 Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful.
6 The Lord preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me.
7 Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee.
8 For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.
9 I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living.
KJV
Death is the great unknown of life. Why do people die, what happens after one dies, is death the end or is there something on the other side? A famous actress recently died and she said about death that “All my questions will be answered when I die”. We do not have to wait until we die to have those questions answered and if one does wait until they die the answer they receive will not be a good one. Most people have no peace when they think or talk of death because they have no peace or rest with the Lord. We are born, because of our sin nature with a soul apart from God and one without rest. (Ps 116:7 Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee.) The only way to have rest of soul is to have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, to be born again. When we have that relationship then we can call upon the name of the Lord when troubled about anything. (Ps 116:4 Then called I upon the name of the Lord; O Lord, I beseech thee, deliver my soul.) And when we have eternal life in Christ we realize that we have been delivered from man’s greatest enemy, death. (Ps 116:8 For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.) Then all my questions about death are answered. What happens when we die, where do we go, what waits for us on the others side. Many of these questions are answered in this Psalm which we will look at the next few days. But one must come to Christ, one must be born again. Do you have that personal relationship with Jesus Christ is the question you must answer today.
