Gen 28:18-22 And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.
19 And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.
20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
21 So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the Lord be my God:
22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

Jacob was one who had many problems in his spiritual life that included not being willing to wait on the Lord and trying to do things on his own without seeking the Lord’s help or will. All of those problems stem from Jacob not being willing to just take God at His word, to just believing God. Take the “If” that we find in verse twenty above, “If God will be with me”. God had already promised to do the things that follow the “If” of Jacob and was already doing those things. Look at the life of Jacob as revealed in the Word of God and you find God already doing those things many times over. All Jacob had to do was believe God, take God at His word. I see many times in my life when I am troubled it is because I have not taken God at His word, I just need to believe and trust God. When I do trust and obey as the great hymn states I find a peace that overtakes all my fears and worries. Why not just believe God, take God at His word?
