What to do when you are discouraged, when the storms of life seem to be overwhelming, when trouble seems to be coming in waves and when understanding is far from you. What to do? Begin by praising the Lord, begin by blessing His name, begin by remember all the wondrous works of the Lord and begin by thinking of all that the Lord has done for you. My Bible says that “From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the Lord’s name is to be praised.” I find in my own life that when I begin to praise and thank the Lord that the storms I may be in become much less, the waves of trouble not so high. The problem with many of us is that we do not stop to count our blessings as we should. Some time ago my day began with a two and one half hour car trip to visit one in a hospital. As I had to leave very early in the morning I was going to spend my time in the car in prayer as I often pray while driving. On that occasion I began to thank the Lord for the day, for salvation, for the things I normally do but then began to think back over my life and began to thank the Lord for His blessings and the things that God had done for me over the years. When I arrived at my destination my time driving had been spent in prayer but not one request had been made. All my time was spent in giving thanks to God. What I found was that the blessings far outweighed the storms of life. The good things of God calmed the waves of troubles. I have learned that to give praise and thanks lifts one above discouragement and gives one peace in even in the midst of a storm.
