Rom 8:14-18 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
KJV
I have been spending a great deal of time in Romans chapter eight the past few weeks and Lord willing I am going to be preaching on the inheritance of the believer this coming Sunday. An inheritance is something we look forward to, something that will be coming to us in the future, something handed down. While there is much that we can look forward to as believers in Christ, there is a rich future inheritance, there is also much we receive from the Lord Jesus Christ right now. As a child of God I can claim right now as part of my inheritance in Christ the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit within. I can claim access to the throne room of God in prayer all hours of the day or night. I can claim the ability to understand His Word because His Spirit guides into all truth. I can claim angelic beings watching over me at all times. Many things I have right now in Christ are part of my inheritance. I also find something I must claim that I would rather leave behind, the sufferings of this present time. (Verse 18) They also are a part of our inheritance in Christ. Jesus said “If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.” The Bible tells us “Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.” And Jesus said “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” The trials of this life are also part of my inheritance in Christ. But one ting that separates the believer from those who are lost, we don’t have to face these trials alone. Another separating factor is that we will be rewarded in heaven if we endure faithfully the trials of this life. I know so many right now who seem to be going through so much. Sickness, the loss of loved ones, financial pressures and more and more than I wish to mention in this devotional. I myself will have surgery later today and these things are part of our inheritance. But a larger part will be ours one day as the Father rewards faithfulness to Christ. Let us focus on our future inheritance more than some of the present.
