August 17th, 2021 by Pastor SolleyPs 52 Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God endureth continually.
Thy tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.
Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah.
Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue.
God shall likewise destroy thee for ever, he shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of thy dwelling place, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah.
The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him:
Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.
But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever.
I will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done it: and I will wait on thy name; for it is good before thy saints.

This Psalm paints a very bleak picture of people. One can read this and think “I am glad I am not like the one in this Psalm.” But wait, we are that one. In our hearts we are that one. Why would God want anything to do with us, why would Christ die for us, why would the offer of salvation and the free pardon of sin be offered to us through Jesus Christ? Why? Because of verse eight “I trust in the mercy of God”. The mercy of God is extended to the lost man everyday but also to the Christian as well. Let me look back at yesterday and note the things I did that made me worthy of salvation and I find none. But let me look back and note the things I did that give God reason to distance Himself from me and take back that salvation and the page begins to fill up. Praise His name that I can also trust in the mercy of God. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow I can trust in the mercy of God. That does not give me a license to sin but it does give me great comfort to know that I can continually trust in the mercy of God. Now let us who are born again rejoice in the last two verses of this Psalm. (Ps 52:8-9 But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever. 9 I will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done it: and I will wait on thy name; for it is good before thy saints.)
