Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.
In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.
For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.
And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.

One has to wonder how many other things this man tried before Jesus appeared upon the scene. (Jesus did not just happen to walk past.) How many times did he see another make it into the water before him? How many had he hired to wait with him and help him into the water only to be disappointed? How many left him down? But that day the one who could make him whole stood before him and now what would he do? If he could walk he would have done so long before this. If he could have picked up his bed he would have long before this. Now this man, whom he had never seen tells him “Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.” What would he do? We know he obeyed and was made whole. Why does it take us so long so many times to turn to Jesus? When we are weak, when we are tired, when we have little hope, why does it take us so long to turn to Jesus? How many times have we waited to have others help us, turned to others, tried all that we know to do and nothing works? Why does it take us so long to turn to Jesus? Jesus will not just happen by when we need Him, He is always there so why not just turn to Jesus first?
