33 They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
KJV
This passage has always amazed me as Jesus is speaking to the Jews and tells them that the truth, which is Jesus Christ, will make them free if they would only believe on Him. They answer that there were never in bondage while at the same time they were in bondage to Rome and had been in bondage to Gentile powers for hundreds of years. They could not even see the bondage they were in. Not much different today than the lost man not able to see the bondage they are in. Drug use is on such a rise today and most given to the drugs do not see the bondage they are in and how they are destroying their lives as well as the lives of those around them. I was visiting a man in jail quite some time ago because he had been drinking and driving. It was another in a long list of times he had been arrested and this time he would be doing a longer sentence and sent to State Prison. As we talked he told me, from behind bars, that alcohol never hurt anyone and the first thing he would do after he was released was go to a bar. That man had no idea the bondage he was in. But how many of us struggle with sin, struggle with one thing or another, are in bondage, and will not turn that over to Jesus so He can set us free. Jesus is the truth and when we give all to Him He does set us free.
