Still looking at the phrase “Be strong”. Five times it is used in the book of Joshua and each time it has reference to defeating the enemies of God and taking possession of the land God had prepared for His people. It was a land they had never been in before but it was God’s place and blessing for them. (The other reference in Joshua are 1:9, 18 ; 10:25 ; 17:18) Israel did possess the land, did defeat and drive out th enemies of God. The next time that phrase is used is in 1 Sam 4:9 (1 Sam 4:9 Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.) Now back to the enemies of God. My point is this today, the Philistines were now trying to encourage each other to be strong and this is the face of Israel. They needed to be strong as Israel was strong, but they would be found looking in the wrong places. Much like the world today tries to find strength in the face of trouble in all the wrong places. Many look to alcohol or drugs, to family or friends, to government and now even science. But where can we find real strength to face the enemies of our day? In the one who gave strength to Israel, in the Lord Jesus Christ and in Him alone. What or who are you looking to for strength today? If not to Jesus then you are looking in the wrong place.
