Luke 23:25-26 And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.
26 And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.
KJV
We were given a very blessed Easter Sunday yesterday. Able to spend time in the house of God both morning and evening. Able to listen to special music offered in praise to Jesus. Able to keep the Lord’s Table in our evening service and welcome some who have been ill back into our services. What a blessed day. Now on Monday after Easter I think of the verses above. Simon was chosen by the Roman soldiers to bear the cross of Jesus. Or was he? Let us consider this morning that it was God that chose Simon to bear the cross of Jesus. Jesus was going to Calvary to offer His life a sacrifice for sin and Simon could not do that. But the cross suggests some other things as well. Jesus said we are to take up our cross, to bear a cross for Him. In taking the cross of Jesus Simon was seen by others, watched by others, and so are we if we claim that we are Christians. Others are watching us, watching our actions, listening to our words. Just as they watched Simon carrying the cross of Jesus they watch the professing Christian to see if we are truly bearing a cross. What do others see when they look at you? Do they see one bearing the cross of Jesus or do they see one carrying a banner of the world? We can never walk in the steps of Jesus as far as the cross He bore. But we can be seen as one bearing the cross of Christianity, we can be seen as one following after Jesus, we can be seen as one separate from the world. Others are watching today just as they watched Simon. What do they see when they see you?
