John 1:29-36 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.
31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.
35 Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;
36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

The word behold is used over 1,300 times in the Bible, first in the first chapter of the first book in the Bible and last in the last chapter of the last book in the Bible. It means simply to see. The first use of the word behold concerns a gift from God to man. (Gen 1:29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.) God giving to man food for life. The last use of the world behold concerns a gift from God to man. (Rev 22:12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.) A reward from God to man, an eternal reward. In between is the most important use of the word behold in the Bible, when John pointed out the Lamb of God, “Behold the Lamb of God”. We need to take time to look at Jesus this week, look at the Lamb of God and for one very important reason. It is the Lamb of God and the Lamb of God alone that can take away the sin of the world. Make verse twenty nine above very personal this morning, put yourself in the reading this morning for it is the Lamb of God and only the Lamb of God that can take away your sin. No more important words were ever spoken by John the Baptist than the ones recorded in our reading this morning, “Behold the Lamb of God”. All of his listeners knew the importance of the Lamb, the Passover Lamb, that lamb that was a sacrifice for sin, that lamb whose blood brought them out of bondage, that lamb whose blood made an atonement for sin. Now there was a Lamb of God that would not cover but take away sin, that perfect Lamb that could take away the sin of the world. Have you looked to the Lamb of God today? Are you rejoicing in the Lamb of God today? Have you put your faith and trust in the Lamb of God for forgiveness of sin and eternal salvation? It is only by the Lamb that we can have our sin washed away, have you trusted in the Lamb of God? As John pointed out the Lamb he pointed to the one who could suffer and die to take away sin. This week leading up to Easter we will look at the Lamb of God. I hope and pray today you have placed your eternal soul and spirit in the capable hands of the Lamb of God.
