39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

What is the answer for such sorrow of soul, such heartache, such heaviness that we see in the first verse of our text this morning? Jesus was exceeding sorrowful, even unto death. Quite a statement that one is. A burden so great, one so heavy that even the Son of God was brought to the point of death. That is what the Bible tells us. Read carefully that first verse. What can lift us above that point when we are exceeding sorrowful? What of the burden upon you, the heartache you carry, the heaviness of your soul? Jesus went through the very same thing and Jesus had the answer for such a time. Jesus prayed. Jesus could have called twelve legions of angels we find out later. Jesus could have stopped all life right there and then. The very one who spoke the world into being could have done any number of things to change the circumstances He was in. But Jesus did the one thing we all can do, Jesus prayed. There is a lot to gather from Jesus prayer in the garden and we will look closer at that prayer over the next few days. But today, if your soul is exceeding sorrowful, begin to follow the example of the Savior and pray.
