Jer 18:1-6 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,
2 Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.
3 Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.
4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.
5 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.
KJV
It would not be a common thing for a potter to choose a lump of clay and find nothing in it that needed to be removed, almost all the time it would be marred. (Verse 4) As the wheel turned he would detect a small stone perhaps rubbing against his hand and he would have to remove it and begin again. This might occur many times in the making of the vessel. Each time the clay would go through this refining process as it was shaped by the skilful hands of the potter. How many things must the Lord remove from our lives until He can make us into what would be a vessel for His use? For myself I know it was many and there still remains much for the potter to do. The question is how much will we fight against this refining process? The clay never fought back. Of course it couldn’t, it was completely under the control of the potter. Just as we should allow the Lord to mold and shape us as we submit to His authority over us and place ourselves in His hands.
