12:1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
4 So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.
Abraham would become a man of faith and complete obedience as we see in Gen 22 when he willing laid his son on the altar in obedience to the command of God. But it was not always so with Abraham. Notice the call and command of God in verse 1. Abraham was to get out of the country and away from his kindred. He obeyed the command to leave but notice verse 4. Lot went with him. His kindred went with him. If you read the next several chapters of Genesis you see that Lot caused him much trouble. What is the lesson? Anything less than complete obedience to the command of God will hinder us in our walk with the Lord. It is a lesson that Abraham learned, it is a lesson we all must learn.
