5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Jesus was a man of sorrows, He carried many burdens and all of them for us. The Bible says He was wounded and bruised. The word wounded points to the broken body and shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross. The word bruised takes it a step farther. That word in Hebrew means to be crushed, squeezed to the point of death, the life of one slowly squeezed out of them in a very painful way. This bruising began I believe at the start of His public ministry if not before that. How it must have hurt Jesus to see sin all about Him, to see those who rejected Him choose sin and hell over salvation and life. How it must have hurt Him to hear the religious leaders lying to the people, deceiving the people, turning the people to hell. How it must have hurt Him to be denied and forsaken by His own. Jesus was bruised and that is the perfect word because it tells us of the pain endured by Jesus Christ for us. I have suffered many cuts over the years and many bruises as well. One thing I have learned, a bruise is often more painful than a cut. Jesus was wounded, did shed His blood and that blood washes away our sin. But Jesus was also bruised, was crushed, the life squeezed out of Him in a very painful way. What goes beyond my understanding is who Jesus went through this for.
