20 And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon.
21 And they stood every man in his place round about the camp: and all the host ran, and cried, and fled.
22 And the three hundred blew the trumpets, and the Lord set every man’s sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Beth-shittah in Zererath, and to the border of Abel-meholah, unto Tabbath.

Why is it “The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon.” Why not just the sword of the Lord? Couldn’t God have defeated the enemy without the aid of Gideon? Did God need Gideon to have this victory? The answers to those questions is of course no, God didn’t need and doesn’t need the help of man. But God wanted Gideon to be in the fight, God wanted Gideon to stand against the enemy, God wanted Gideon to pick up the sword. When Gideon did those things God gave the victory. There are times in our Christian lives when we need to stand up, when we need to take action and not because God needs us but because God wants us to be active as Gideon was. My part may be as simple as being faithful in prayer, but God wants me to do my part. Are there times, perhaps now, when you see little victory in your Christian life? Perhaps it is time to stand up and do your part, to take up the sword of the Lord as Gideon did.
