6 And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.
7 And David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech’s son, I pray thee, bring me hither the ephod. And Abiathar brought thither the ephod to David.
8 And David inquired at the Lord, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.

David was also encouraged as he once again began to allow the Lord to lead in all areas of his life, “David inquired at the Lord.” If you study this time in David’s life you find decisions made without God in them. David did not necessarily commit acts of sin, but he also failed to seek God’s direction and guidance in his life. This took David to places he did not want to go and he made alliances with those he should not have. All of this took David to the distress we see him in in verse six. One way to be encouraged in this life is to allow the Lord to lead in all areas of our lives at all times.
