Rom 6:3-5
Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
KJV
Baptism is an outward sign of an inward faith, a public identification with Jesus Christ. We are planted and raised together with Christ. (Verse 5) The Jewish sign in the Old Testament was a hidden one, the believers sign in the New Testament is an open one. When a believer is baptized it is an open identification with Jesus Christ. We are saying we want to be identified with Christ, we want to be known as a Christian. There should be no hidden or secret Christians, not in our day, not in America. There is a time coming when faith in Christ will bring a death sentence but that time is not here yet. Paul was not ashamed of the gospel or Jesus and neither should we. Baptism tells the world we are not ashamed, we want to be known as a Christian, we want to be identified with Jesus Christ.
