20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?
21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.
22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.
KJV
Pride keeps one from Christ and here in our text this morning we find another thing that keeps many from Christ, possessions. This man would hang onto something he had instead of letting it go and coming to Jesus. Possessions can be anything, not just money. Some will not let go of the friends they possess even though they may keep them from Christ. Others are too busy with land that they have, or a home that they have, or even a car that they have to be bothered with Jesus. Some will not let go of the good times they possess and come to Jesus Christ. A possession can be anything that keeps one from the Lord, not just money. What was it that you had to hold onto so tightly that you would not get saved, what kept you from getting saved? After we let go we find that Jesus Christ is a much greater possession. The problem is getting people to let go of what is keeping them from Christ, let go of their possessions.
