13 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.
KJV
The last use of “Ye must” in the Bible deals with being in subjection to the powers of government and it does remind me of our day and age. We live in the land of the free and home of the brave according to our national anthem, but could anything be farther from the truth today? Our government infringes on our freedom on a daily basis it seems and we certainly live in the land of the timid and cowardly. I must keep in mind that God is in control of even our government and although it does many things that I cannot agree with, I am still subject to it. Today we live in the land that murders the unborn, provides drugs for the addict, grants pardon to the most dangerous of criminals. What can we do? Pray for government, but be subject to it. I visit with a WWII vet each week, that man fought in the battle of the bulge, was one of the first men to cross into Germany, did all that as a teenager. Today’s teens need to be protected from bullies, from harsh words, need to be cuddled and made to feel all warm and fuzzy. Yes things have changed, but those changes are an indication that the return of the Lord is near. Until that time we need to follow the Bible, even in relation to our government.
